Why on earth do so many people associate drug use with Buddhism?

A lot of people have made some reference to marijuana or other drugs in response to learning that I am a Buddhist, and I simply do not understand this. I have abstained from alcohol and drugs my entire life because it is a part of my religion. Yet most people that I meet immediately associate the very religion that inspires my abstinence with the self-destructive drugs that it prohibits. Why on earth do so many people associate a religion that advocates clearness of mind with a substance that clouds one’s mind? The Pañca-Sīla (Five Precepts), a moral code that all Buddhist laymen adhere to, tells us “to refrain from intoxicants, which lead to heedlessness” So why the association?
Primordius: Seeking to comprehend something that I do not understand does not make me a bad Buddhist, it makes me a better one…

Drug cartels grow marijuana on public land

Cartels grow pot on ‘national treasures’ Marijuana cultivation on public land in the US is a multibillion-dollar business, run by Mexican drug cartels and guarded by heavily armed members of US-based street gangs and Mexican nationals, says the head of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). “Our national treasures are now ground zero for international and domestic drug cultivation and trafficking,” said drug czar John P. Walters. “We must push back against the invasion of foreign drug-trafficking organizations through increased law-enforcement collaboration, enhanced intelligence and expanded investigations to reclaim our public lands.” Mr. Walters made his comments last week during Operation Alesia, a multiagency marijuana-eradication initiative in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, the largest national forest in California. Coordinated by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office with the support of the California National Guard, the weeklong operation involved 17 federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies. “America’s public lands are under attack,” Mr. Walters said. “Instead of being appreciated as national treasures, they are being exploited and destroyed by foreign drug-trafficking organizations and heavily armed Mexican marijuana cartels.” ONDCP spokesman Stephen E. Schatz said violent Mexican drug cartels construct, operate and manage 80 percent to 90 percent of all US-based marijuana plantations — most of which are in Arizona, California

Where can someone go for medical advice on recreational drug use.?

I am a certified pharmacy technician with a large amount of knowledge on prescription medications of all kinds; everything from diabetes care to erectile dysfunction.

I am also an active member of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws)

Also I believe that there can be a healthy relationship between the many scheduled recreational drugs and today’s society.
The other day at work I was asked if a patients medications would interact with certain psychedelic and narcotic drugs he uses socially and for recreation purposes.
Not knowing myself and my pharmacist not being allowed to answer such questions I consulted our databases and books.

We had nothing on such information. So what I am looking for is a place someone (including myself) can go to get the information necessary to safely use recreational drugs. Most mainstream drugs do not have many interactions of people who did not know the effects of alcohol on alprazolam and other benzo-diazipates. Another interaction we see is ADHD medication like Ritalin and caffeine cause insomnia.

There are thousands of ways drugs can interact negatively and cause severe permanent damage to the user, both medically and recreationaly.

I want to find a place to help responsible recreational drug users and educate them in ways to protect them from the dangers that they may run into.

Does anyone know of such a place. I get a lot of my information from Erowid but I am looking for something that you can talk one on one, detect the problems of abuse and addiction before the damage is done and help those who are already that far in.

Any Ideas?

What is your opinion Mexico drug cartel uses 94 yo Mexican woman to smuggle drugs into US?

NOGALES, Ariz. — Authorities said a 94-year-old Mexican woman has been arrested and accused of trying to smuggle more than 10 pounds of marijuana across the border into Arizona.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said the woman from Nogales, Sonora, was attempting to cross the border on Tuesday for a day of shopping.

But an officer became suspicious and referred her for further inspection. That’s when, authorities said, they found 10½ pounds of marijuana strapped to the woman’s body from her torso to her legs.

Officials said the six bundles of seized marijuana had an estimated street value of about $5,000. The elderly woman was not identified and was turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Should the U.S. govt. show mercy and just deport the drug smuggling granny back to Mexico?

Would this Bill ever make it through to be Law, U.S. Drug Policy Would Be Imposed Globally By New House Bill?

-

The House Judiciary Committee passed a bill yesterday that would make it a federal crime for U.S. residents to discuss or plan activities on foreign soil that, if carried out in the U.S., would violate the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) — even if the planned activities are legal in the countries where they’re carried out. The new law, sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) allows prosecutors to bring conspiracy charges against anyone who discusses, plans or advises someone else to engage in any activity that violates the CSA, the massive federal law that prohibits drugs like marijuana and strictly regulates prescription medication.

“Under this bill, if a young couple plans a wedding in Amsterdam, and as part of the wedding, they plan to buy the bridal party some marijuana, they would be subject to prosecution,” said Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance, which advocates for reforming the country’s drug laws. “The strange thing is that the purchase of and smoking the marijuana while you’re there wouldn’t be illegal. But this law would make planning the wedding from the U.S. a federal crime.”

The law could also potentially affect academics and medical professionals. For example, a U.S. doctor who works with overseas doctors or government officials on needle exchange programs could be subject to criminal prosecution. A U.S. resident who advises someone in another country on how to grow marijuana or how to run a medical marijuana dispensary would also be in violation of the new law, even if medical marijuana is legal in the country where the recipient of the advice resides. If interpreted broadly enough, a prosecutor could possibly even charge doctors, academics and policymakers from contributing their expertise to additional experiments like the drug decriminalization project Portugal, which has successfully reduced drug crime, addiction and overdose deaths.

Whats the best way to pass a drug screening for a job? (mature only)?

so i can say that i’m a heavy smoker of marijuana, i’ll smoke everyday. I will probably get hired for this job and i think they will give me a urine test. I want to know if bringing clean urine is the best way to go, or if there are actually any detox sold in smoke shops or stores that actually work. i’ve heard of stories where people use detox sold in smoke shops and they pass the test as long as you follow the directions and don’t buy a shitty one. IF this is true someone let me know if it worked for you. IF NOT, then is bringing clean urine the best way to go? also im wondering what the process is like when the job does the screening, its for a Times SuperMarket, they have a pharmacy too. If you passed a drug screening before how did you do it? THANKS IN ADVANCE
