@dsessom Trust me I know about the black market. I grew up in the projects in the 1980’s. In my experience there are two groups most fearful of legalization of any drugs, the police and the dealers. Luckily at least there are people who, while they can’t say anything while they are in the system, come out and join LEAP to let everyone know how broken it is. And its the same lame bullshit when all they can do is accuse you of having used drugs instead of coming up with anything real.

I am a LEAP speaker in Oklahoma. I do not smoke weed. I don’t even drink except rare occasions. Supporting legalization does NOT equal condoning its use. I fully support Prop 19 because people are going to use it whether it is legal or not. The black market that has been created in the past 40 years is FAR more destructive than any drug could ever be. Patriotic is a great way to look at it. You want a safer society? Legalize marijuana. Kill the black market.
Sheriff Lee Baca is a moron. I was a Deputy Sheriff and a Corrections Officer. I do not smoke weed, but fully support Prop 19. Anyone who thinks that only marijuana users support legalization is simply ignorant. I support legalization for several reasons. 1. To get rid of the black market which is responsible for so much violence. 2. To greatly reduce prison populations. 3. To end a great number of cruel search and seizure raids. 4. To make it harder for kids to get it.
I expect that there are Mormons claiming that caffeinated beverages, or tobacco cigarettes, are gateway drugs because studies show that most people who use heroin have used caffeinated beverages and/or tobacco prior in their lives. The case against marijuana as a gateway drug is just as flimsy, with one exception: if you have to buy it illegally, you are more likely to have to go to someone who sells other illegal substances. Legalization fixes that problem.

Legalizing cannabis does NOT add a new drug to society, because it’s already there and it won’t go away. In fact, having marijuana legal will decrease the number of alcoholics because some will become marijuana addicts instead, which is a good thing, since the cannabinoids are nowhere near the toxicity level of alcohol. The vast majority of consumers (~90%) aren’t going to develop any problematic use pattern anyway just as with alcohol. This scare mongering bs the prohibitionists is just BS!
The notion of cannabis being THE gateway drug is not correct, because every drug (whether legal or not) can act as a gateway drug. Whether a drug acts as a gateway drug or not is not due to pharmacology but to its social status. This gateway effect is just an illusion to the observer just as the illusion of the sun revolving around the earth because it goes up in the east and down in the west.

There is no proof that marijuana itself can kill anyone. Since marijuana is so much safer than alcohol and tobacco, maybe we should be encouraging people to smoke it instead.
