Legalize marijuana demonstration which assembled in University Avenue and proceeded through Glasgow’s West End down Byres Rd, turned left and continued along Dumbarton Road and Argyle St, passed Kelvin Hall and the Glasgow Museum & Art Galleries to much cheering from young people on the embankment until they reached Kelvingrove Park where the sound of reggae beats could be heard (whenever the PA system worked intermittently!) Despite cannabis being a less harmful drug than alcohol and prescription painkillers and drugs used to treat extreme anxiety and hyperactivity, it is still illegal in most places. Medical and police experts recognise that marijuana is not a dangerous drug, and in fact the majority of police feel it to be a waste of their time to have to deal with cases of marijuana possession when their resources would be better spent on tackling real crimes. Cannabis was classified as a list C drug but instead of legalising it, the government upgraded it to class B drug, probably to make it extremely difficult to legalise by placing it two steps away from legalisation but only one step away from being associated with hard drugs. This demonisation of marijuana continues in spite of long experience showing that it is relatively harmless compared with substances like alcohol which is legal in most places. Certainly, the
