Lt. Gov. Ramsey: Let States Decide Drug Laws, Just Like Liquor

Tennessee Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey is no advocate of marijuana law relaxation or reform in the Volunteer State. But he has been a strong supporter of state sovereignty and the 10th Amendment. Asked if his support extends to states being able to determine their own policies with regard to drug laws — even if those laws come into conflict with federal law — Ramsey said it indeed does. Like liquor laws, drug laws should be decided “on a state-by-state basis,” said Ramsey, a tea-party favorite who finished third in the August GOP gubernatorial primary. California voters will decide Nov. 2 on Proposition 19, a ballot measure that would legalize “recreational” marijuana use and cultivation. The Obama Justice Department has indicated its opposition to Prop. 19 and promised to arrest Californians who grow or distribute marijuana regardless of the plant’s legal status at the state level. www.tnreport.com
