Can I get a prescription for medicinal marijuana due to genetic susceptibility to cancer?
The other day I found out that at least three types of cancer if not more run in my family. These would be prostate, rectal, and lung cancer, and very possibly heart cancer. My question is, with this knowledge and “genetic susceptibility”, could I get a prescription for medicinal marijuana in an attempt to lower the number of cancer-causing free radicals in my body?
(Don’t answer if you want to criticize weed or voice your opinion. This is a question seeking an answer, not a forum post.)

Pot has never been shown to prevent cancer. Where it helps is with chemotherapy and radiation that you get when you are treated for cancer. So you can’t get it just because there’s cancer in your family.
But here in California where I live, the pot ‘clubs’ usually have a listing of doctors who will give just about anyone a recommendation for pot. I have several friends who have pot cards who have nothing really wrong with them. They just went to one of these doctors and said “I get really bad headaches sometimes.” It’s not hard to get a card.
Marijuana does not prevent cancer. It is used to treat the nausea caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients.
When you say ‘at least three types of cancer if not more run in my family’, do you simply mean that members of your family have had those types of cancer?
Because cancer that ‘runs in the family’ is actually very rare – fewer than 10% of all cancer cases, all types, are hereditary. Cancer diagnosed after the age of 50 is even less likely to be hereditary.
An isolated case of a type of cancer in a family is not hereditary, nor is several family members having had different types of cancer. And you don’t inherit a general tendency to get cancer.
A sign that cancer MAY be hereditary is when several members of the same side of a family have had the SAME type of cancer, especially if some have developed it at a younger than usual age.
In those particular circumstances it may be considered appropriate for genetic testing (for those types of cancer where it’s available) to establish whether the cancers are due to a rare inherited faulty gene.
On top of that, there’s no scientific proof, that marijuana helps to prevent any type of cancer. So, no; a prescription is pretty much out of the question.

i also believe that marijuana can lower your chances of getting cancer. i advise you to watch the documentary Run from the cure by Rick Simpson. he cured his own skin cancer with thc oil and a band aid. might sound insane. but just watch for yourself. he has other people who follow him and it worked for them too. and Harvard University found in a study that marijuana cut a cancer tumor in half.
